| Theme: Stress and Tension Continuous change, high performance demands, information overload, competition and tension between people, which are typical of modern-day life, study and working situations result increasingly in people suffering from physical and mental stress. Symptoms of stress can be sleeplessness, lack of concentration, susceptibility to infections, physical discomfort, a sense of rush and inadequacy to meet the expectations of others, and difficulty to relax. Once an individual or a team has been caught by stress, the symptoms become self-reinforcing, leading to poor performance, illness, and at a certain point to physical and mental breakdown. As if reflecting a constant weight placed on someone, physically stress often presents itself first in the neck and shoulder area, then moving to the back and arms. Depending on the specific working situation complaints can include heart and stomach problems, Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI), etc. High performance demands and constant pressure also cause release of high levels of adrenaline and other neuro-chemicals, overworking and draining the adrenals and other glands. Mentally, stress makes it more and more difficult for a person to wind down, to involve in other than work activities, and to enjoy what is being done. Spiritually the negative mind starts to dominate, until the point that one gets deeply frustrated with living. |
